Paying it forward
My father had two extensive double bass classes, in Utrecht and Amsterdam. Annoyingly, he always talked about his students as his ‘other’ children. I actually now start to understand what he meant with that. It’s such a big but beautiful responsibility. Teaching for me is like a mirror – it teaches me at the same time.
Together with Olivier Thiery, I took over my father’s Amsterdam class in 2014. Nowadays, I am a guest teacher in Amsterdam, as I started my own class in Düsseldorf in 2016. At this moment, I have 14 students in Düsseldorf. I am proud to see some of them being appointed at wonderful orchestras in Amsterdam, London, Berlin, amongst others.
